Secrets to Writing a Kick-ass Bio
April 14, 2010
Biography: An account of a person’s life, written, composed or produced by another.
How general an explanation is given by the modern dictionary!
The fact is, not all biographies (bio) can be so loosely defined. In the business world, a biography typically focuses on an individual’s experiences and career path. In today’s world, expect that you will need to provide a bio at some stage in your career – developing a good one is an important part of your self-promotion and a concise way to set you apart from the crowd.
What makes a good biography?
A well-written biography grabs the reader’s attention with the first line, provides pertinent information and will entertain the reader from start to finish. Your life is your story but don’t be afraid to leave out details that don’t add value or support your accomplishments.
How long should your biography be?
Less is more is a good rule of thumb when developing your bio. Too many details and your readers lose interest. Highlight your most noteworthy accomplishments and, above all, keep it simple.
Who should write my biography?
You have two options: write it yourself, or have someone else write it. If you have trouble bragging about your accomplishments, ask someone else to write your bio. Above all else, your bio should emphasize your merits and elevate your position with the reader.
How often should I update my biography?
Whenever you have something new to talk about – a new accomplishment, a career change, a defining career moment and so on – you should update your bio. At a minimum, review it once a year to ensure it stays fresh.
A good bio will help build your story. You want it to be memorable. In today’s crowded market, standing out is imperative and first impressions do count!
